火山博物館（タウポ）

ＮＺ北島を移動する場合、動脈・SH1(国道一号線)を利用すると、島のヘソに当たるタウポを通ります。タウポ湖自体がそうですが、周囲にそびえる美しい山々とその風景は、火山活動によってできあがったこの世の芸術です。
そんな火山活動の歴史や防災について分かりやすく展示しているのが、この火山博物館です。

お隣にはもう一つ興味深い建物があります。
「WAIRAKEI Research Center」という「地熱・原子力科学協会」の研究センターですが、こちらは観光用ではありません。

さて、火山博物館にはいるとまず目にはいるのが、「地形模型」。タウポ湖周辺の火山帯の模型です。
その周囲には、数々の説明パネル。
こども達も大変興味を示すのが、一坪ほどの地震体験部屋。
奥にはもう一部屋あって、そこは映像ルームで、10～20分の短編映画を次々に上映しています。
お土産コーナーには、専門書も陳列されています。
子供からこの学問分野の大人まで楽しめる展示となっています。
こどもには入館の記念に、額にマオリの刺青の文様のスタンプを押してくれるのも楽しいですね。
